# Case Study: KMCM.fm — Engineering a Gamified Local Micro-Economy

## The Friction: The Disconnect Between Ads and Foot Traffic

One of the oldest problems in local advertising is attribution. A local restaurant or retail shop pays for a radio ad, but they have no actual way to prove that the person who walked in the door did so because they heard the commercial. It is often just a guess.

We wanted to completely eliminate that guesswork. We wanted to build a closed-loop system where local businesses could get 100% verifiable proof that their media spend was driving actual, physical human beings through their front doors.

Our solution was **KMCM.fm**.

### The Build: A Gamified Local Audio App
KMCM.fm isn't just a streaming station; it is a gamified, local micro-economy engineered specifically for Tacoma, University Place, and the broader South Sound. We built the platform around four core pillars, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that benefits the listener, the business, the community, and local creators.

**Pillar 1: The Listener Experience (Earning "Hertz")**
We incentivize users to explore their own community. Listeners create a profile within the app and earn our proprietary digital reward points, called "Hertz."
* **Listening:** Users earn Hertz simply by streaming the station.
* **Exploring & Wellness:** Users earn Hertz by getting outside, walking around, and checking in at local parks and community environments.
* **The Audio Vibe:** We control the entire audio environment. We heavily utilize AI "vibe coding" to generate custom, highly engaging audio streams that keep our listener base active and growing.

**Pillar 2: The Business Experience (Verifiable Physical ROI)**
The Hertz earned by the listener have no cash value—their only value is in the real world. Listeners use their stored Hertz to unlock exclusive, one-time deals and "Loot Drops" at participating local businesses.
* **Geo-Fencing:** We can geo-target and time-release special ads when a user walks near a specific local business.
* **Evergreen Profiles:** Businesses can maintain an evergreen profile in the app with standing offers.
* **Custom Audio:** We custom-create the music and audio ads for the business.
* **The Receipts:** Because the deals are exclusive to KMCM and tracked via the app, the business owner gets undeniable, verifiable proof of foot traffic.

**Pillar 3: The Community Signal (Safety & Live Events)**
A platform that touches the whole city must be responsible. We built KMCM with a strict focus on active stewardship.
* **Internal Safety Governors:** We’ve engineered proprietary internal governors into the app’s ad delivery system. If a sponsor is catering specifically to an adult audience (21+), our system ensures those ads and notifications are never served to minors.
* **The Live Events Portal:** We built a portal that scrapes and aggregates the latest local events across the South Sound. Users can check in at these events to earn Hertz, turning a digital app into a catalyst for real-world civic participation.

**Pillar 4: The Creator Pipeline & AR Roadmap**
We believe technology should put power back into the hands of local neighbors and artists.
* **The NW Station & Direct Tipping:** We are carving out a dedicated space within the app for "Northwest-only" musicians and personalities. We reject the "gatekeeper" model—when a user listens to a local band, the app provides direct links to the artist’s own payment sites (Venmo, PayPal). We don't take a cut.
* **The AR Future:** We are currently deploying our Augmented Reality (AR) roadmap. Soon, "Loot Drops" won't just be notifications; users will use their phones or AR glasses to physically see and collect digital rewards inside local businesses.

### The Milestone: Moving to the App Stores
What started as a frictionless, native mobile browser test to stress-test our architecture has officially leveled up. KMCM is now moving into the official iOS and Android Play Stores.

By combining safety protocols, local art support, and future-tech like AR, KMCM.fm has moved beyond a "streaming app" and into a fully realized digital operation. We are proving that you just need a deep understanding of your community and the operational logic to execute world-class tech.

### Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

**What is the KMCM.fm app?**
It is a custom, gamified audio streaming app built by That One Firm. Users earn digital rewards (Hertz) by listening to music and checking in at local South Sound locations, which they can redeem for real-world deals at local businesses.

**How does KMCM help local businesses?**
It solves the attribution problem. Because users have to redeem their Hertz in-person to unlock exclusive app deals, the business owner receives verifiable proof that the advertising spend resulted in physical foot traffic (Physical ROI).

**How do your "Internal Governors" handle age-restricted ads?**
Our system uses internal data layers to filter ad notifications. If a business sponsor (like a local brewery) is running a 21+ deal, the app identifies the user's profile status and prevents the notification from reaching anyone under the legal age.

**How does direct tipping work for musicians?**
We don't process the payments. We provide a direct bridge to the artist's preferred payment platform. When you hear a local band you love, you can tip them 100% of the funds directly, ensuring our local creators get the support they deserve without middleman fees.

**When will the AR capabilities be available?**
Augmented Reality (AR) "Loot Drops" are part of our post-beta roadmap. We are currently stress-testing the architecture in the official App Stores to ensure a seamless rollout for our local business partners.
